The MOSAICO Project presents a municipal by-law to the local councils of la vera for the prevention of forest fires
On 26 March, the new headquarters of the Mancomunidad de La Vera, in Cuacos de Yuste, hosted a key meeting for forest safety in the region. The Mosaico Project team met with most of the mayors and, where applicable, councillors from the area to present a proposal for a municipal by-law to regulate forest fires.
La Vera is currently the region of Extremadura with the highest risk of ignition. This vulnerability is due to several critical factors that the ordinance aims to mitigate: the extensive urban-forest interface, abandoned plots that act as fuel in the event of a fire, and the lack of a legal instrument to act swiftly and effectively at a local level.
For this reason, the main objective of the meeting was to provide local councils with a draft that they can present at their respective plenary sessions. Once approved, this by-law would provide a regulatory framework for fire prevention activities, defining which actions are permitted and which are not in high-risk areas, and establishing the legal capacity to penalise risky behaviour or the abandonment of plots.
In addition, the meeting served to report on the actions that the Mosaico Project has carried out in La Vera to date, demonstrating the positive impact of land management.
Finally, a proposal was put forward to form a partnership with the Association of Forestry Companies of La Vera, with a view to strengthening the local professional network and ensuring that the management of our forests is sustainable and generates employment in the region.
